Chipotle Mexican Grill, a beloved fast-casual chain known for its burritos and fresh ingredients, has announced plans to close between 55 and 65 underperforming locations across the U.S. While this may sound concerning to fans of the brand, the move is part of a larger strategy to strengthen its operations and continue its ambitious expansion.
Why Is Chipotle Closing Some Restaurants?

“We’re looking at restaurants that aren’t generating positive cash flow,” Hartung explained. “Some of these locations opened in tough spots and just haven’t performed as well as we hoped.”
The closures are expected to take place in the second quarter of 2025. The company will evaluate real estate factors, customer demand, and financial performance before making final decisions.

Despite these closures, Chipotle is still expanding aggressively. The company plans to open over 300 new restaurants in 2024 and 2025, bringing it closer to its goal of reaching 7,000 locations in North America.
